Classmates With A Cause

Jim Culveyhouse

Sadly, Jim's battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) ended on May 17, 2009. Jim stayed in good sprits throughout his 2 year struggle. He served the ALS Division of Oregon’s MDA as their Chairperson for the State of Oregon. Last year, he was featured during last Labor Day's telethon. His energy was untiring and he truly sought nothing for himself but hoped to use his plight to help others.  The month before his death, Notre Dame published a brief online interview with Jim.  His obituary is online here. His courage is admirable, if not inspiring.

Dave Martin

Dave and Julia Martin and their son, Julian, have been battling Julian's regression into autism since the 1998 diagnosis. Julian, who is now 14, will never be able to live independently or care for himself as an adult. With an eye to Julian's future, Dave and his wife have created Julian’s Haven, a non-profit organization dedicated to build residence homes geared to the particular needs of autistics. The homes will provide the special environment to make the adult autistic more comfortable and as functional as possible via facility design and services provided.

They plan to create the first resident home in Shreveport – not only to have Julian live near them, but also because the infrastructure needed for such a facility is there.
They will then use the Shreveport home as a model for the many homes that will be required in the next 10 years by for the tens of thousands of adult autistics who will need such lifetime care when they can no longer live with their parents.
